The freedom of the press and other printing industries was dependent on the will of the regime, potential publications had to pass through different instances of censorship. Disobeying the rules carried harsh penalties. If someone had one of the forbidden books, people took considerable risks in distributing or lending them. including arrest or house arrest. I found recently notebooks with poetry and literature from forbidden East German authors I copied by hand, or typewriter or photographed.
